ISL 2026/27: Commercial Revolution and the Fantasy of a Season Without Relegation
{
On an April afternoon in New Delhi, numbers were arranged side by side on the official bulletin board at the All India Football Federation headquarters. The 2026/27 Indian Super League season will kick off on October 10, nearly five weeks later than the initially planned September 4 date. This delay is not due to any crisis on the pitch, but simply because the federation is still seeking a new broadcast partner — a small detail that reveals the nature of the transformation underway in Indian football.
Thirteen teams will enter this season, a number that has become familiar since ISL expanded. Bengaluru FC, East Bengal FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, FC Goa — names deeply embedded in Indian football fans' memory — continue to compete in the race. But what makes the 2026/27 season special is not the participant list, but the competitive structure and an unprecedented decision: no relegation.
Diamond Harbour FC, the team that finished last season at the bottom, will start the new season as the default bottom-placed team. No playoff or relegation battle is needed. This is a provision clearly described by AIFF in the announcement: this is a one-off measure, applicable only to the 2026/27 season. Everything will return to normal in the 2027/28 season, when Diamond Harbour may lose their status if they fail to meet sporting standards. But for at least one year, the concept of relegation will temporarily disappear from the ISL map.
Along with the no-relegation decision, AIFF announced a completely new playoff system. After the round-robin phase, the top six teams will enter knockout matches to compete for the ISL Cup — the official championship title. Meanwhile, the team leading the table after the round-robin will receive the ISL Shield, a separate honor for the most consistent team throughout the season. This separation between Shield and Cup creates two different motivations: a team can win the Shield but lose the Cup, and vice versa. This is a diversification of honors that ISL has never had before.
But what is truly revolutionary lies in the commercial aspect. For the first time in the league's history, clubs will directly control broadcasting and sponsorship rights. Previously, AIFF held most commercial decisions, distributing revenue according to a centralized formula. Now, the club-led commercial model grants complete autonomy to each team. They can negotiate their own sponsorship contracts, decide broadcasting strategies, and retain most of their commercial revenue. This is a power shift from the governing body to the clubs, a step AIFF describes as a foundation for a sustainable ecosystem.
Churchill Brothers FC, the team from Goa, remains in the approval process to participate in the season. Their involvement is still conditional, depending on legal procedures and sporting standards. If everything goes smoothly, 13 teams will complete the starting lineup. If not, AIFF will have to adjust the competitive structure at the last minute.
The broadcast partner search is the only real concern before the season. The October 10 kickoff date is set, but there is no guarantee the broadcast agreement will be signed on time. This is the biggest risk of the season: if the television partner is not confirmed, the schedule may have to change again, and audience trust in the league's stability will be affected.
Globally, ISL's decision is not unique. Many leagues are seeking to balance competitiveness and financial sustainability. Removing relegation for one season could be an experiment to see if teams thrive more when not playing with a fear-of-failure mentality. But there are also questions: if there is no relegation punishment, will competitive motivation decline at the end of the season? Will the six-team playoff system be enough to maintain tension throughout the round-robin phase? These are questions only time can answer.
The 2026/27 ISL season is not just a football league. It is an experiment in governance, power, and the meaning of competition. Thirteen teams will enter the game with different expectations: Bengaluru FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant aim for the championship, while Diamond Harbour FC just tries to survive despite no relegation threat. Middle-tier teams will have to decide: focus on the Shield or the Cup? Play safe or take risks?
AIFF affirms that the club-led model will create a more sustainable ecosystem. Clubs will have more stable revenue, allowing them to invest in academies, infrastructure, and developing young Indian talent. This is the long-term vision the federation is pursuing, even with short-term risks. But are clubs skilled enough to manage commercial operations professionally? Will the financial gap between teams narrow or widen when each team negotiates its own contracts?
On October 10, when the opening whistle sounds, those questions will begin to be answered. Not through theory or statistics, but through the very moments that only football can create: passes, goals, and moments that define a season. ISL 2026/27 begins not just as a season — it is a new chapter in Indian football history, written in the language of ambition, risk, and untested dreams.
And perhaps, that is what makes football worth watching: no one really knows how the script will unfold until the ball starts rolling.
