The Agony of the Front-Runner

Round 12 of the V-League, on a sunny and windy Thong Nhat Stadium, the league leaders faced the second-to-last team. Nobody called this a marquee matchup. I called it a perfect laboratory. People are used to the league leaders crushing the bottom team. Dominant play, superior possession, a big win. That is the story the media sells you. But I have followed this team since the start of the season, and I see something else: a machine cracking from within. Ball circulation tempo in their last three matches has dropped 12%. Successful presses in the opponent's final third have halved compared to the start of the season. They are still winning. But they are winning like someone trying to swim against the current.
